The College Board

We’re a not-for-profit membership organization committed to excellence and equity in education. Our mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. The College Board collaborates with foundations, corporations, the federal government and philanthropists to support equity, access and research in education.

What We Do

We promote excellence and equity in education through programs for K–12 and higher education institutions, and by providing students a path to college opportunities, including financial support and scholarships. We also serve the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators, schools and colleges.

Who We Serve

Through our work in middle schools, high schools and colleges, we serve more than seven million students and parents and 3,800 colleges and universities in over 180 countries and territories, as well as policymakers on the national and state levels. We also maintain relationships with more than 900 key school districts across the country.

Our History

In 1900, 12 colleges and universities came together to form the College Board. Our purpose was to expand access to higher education and to democratize the application process for students — and for the admission offices. With our development of the common entrance exam (later known as the SAT), students could apply to many institutions without having to sit for multiple tests.
